Trace It: A Letter Tracing Game for Kids

Fly Murphy along each letter, one stroke at a time. Trace It is a gentle first writing game for kids ages 3 to 6, with no timers, no lives and no way to lose.

How to play

Press start, then put a finger (or the mouse) on Murphy and drag him along the dotted line. Little arrows show which way to go. When one stroke is done, Murphy hops to the start of the next one. Finish the whole letter and a picture from the show pops up, along with a star. Five letters earn five stars.

Made for small hands

Little fingers wobble, so the game is forgiving. Going off the line doesn't erase anything; Murphy just waits until the finger comes back. Lifting a finger keeps everything traced so far. Every prompt is spoken out loud for kids who aren't reading yet, and the ? button says it again. The speaker button turns the sound off.

Why tracing helps

Tracing a letter with the same strokes in the same order each time helps kids remember its shape and gets their hands ready for a pencil. Trace It starts with the big letter, then moves to the little letter that goes with it. After each one, the game names a word from the show that starts with that letter, so the shape and the sound stay together.

Tips for grown-ups

  • Say the strokes together while tracing: “down, down, across” for a big A.
  • A tablet or phone works best, because a finger is closer to a pencil than a mouse is.
  • When the game is done, print the free activity sheet for the same letter and try it on paper.

Private by design

This game runs entirely in your browser. There are no accounts, nothing is recorded, and nothing your child does in the game is sent to us. Spoken prompts use a voice that is already on your device, and the sound on/off choice is remembered only in your browser.
