Murphy and the Bouncy BallA Letter B Adventure for Kids

NOW STREAMING

The story

Murphy is playing with his big red ball when one giant BOING sends it bouncing away. A busy, buzzy bee bumps it through the flower garden, a friendly bear catches it and tosses it way up high, and it lands in the basket of a hot air balloon. When it rolls out and splashes into the lake, a little sailboat toots its horn and brings Murphy's ball right back to him.

01Bounce and sayBounce a soft ball back and forth. Each time it bounces, say a word that starts with the “b” sound in ball: bee, bear, boat, banana, bubble. Who can think of the most?
02Bee buzz gardenPut a few toys around the room as “flowers.” Your Couch Buddy buzzes like a bee from flower to flower, gently bumping a ball along the way. Bzzz!
03Bathtub boatsAt bath time, float a cup or a toy boat and see if it can push a little ball across the water, just like the sailboat in the show.

For parents

Murphy just wants his ball back, and on the way kids hear five words that start with the “b” sound: ball, bee, bear, balloon and boat. Each one pops up next to a big letter B, and Murphy says “B is for…” after every discovery, so the letter and its sound show up together again and again.

How do I help my child hear the B sound?

Say it short and bouncy, “b,” not “buh.” Put your lips together and pop them open. Kids can feel the pop by holding a hand in front of their mouth.

Why do b and d get mixed up?

They are mirror images, so lots of young kids flip them. That's normal at this age. Tracing the little b in the game and on the activity sheet, always starting with the tall line, helps it stick.
