The story
Murphy finds a fluffy dandelion in his garden and gets ready to make a wish, but whoosh! The wind blows the puff away. It drifts across the farm onto a sleeping dog's nose (ah-choo!), floats down to the duck pond, where a dandy duck flaps it back into the breeze, and lands on a donkey's long ear (hee-haw!). 01Puff raceLay a cotton ball on the table and blow it gently across with your Couch Buddy, like the wind with the dandelion. Each time it stops, say a D word: dog, duck, door, dot.
02Farm friends soundsTake turns being the sleepy dog (ah-choo!), the duck (quack!) and the donkey (hee-haw!). Say “D is for…” before each sound.
03Dragonfly deliveryYour Couch Buddy zooms a soft toy around the room like a dragonfly and brings it back home to you. Every delivery, say “D is for dragonfly!”
For parents
Murphy follows his dandelion puff across one farm as the wind carries it from friend to friend, and every friend starts with the “d” sound in dog: dandelion, dog, duck, donkey and dragonfly. Each word pops up next to a big letter D, and Murphy says “D is for…” after each one, so kids see the letter and hear its sound together.
How do I help my child say the D sound?
Put the tip of your tongue behind your top teeth and let it drop: “d,” short and quick, not “duh.” Kids can feel the tap if they say it slowly in front of a mirror.
Why do kids mix up b and d?
They are mirror images, so flipping them is very common at this age. Tracing d with the round part first, then the tall line, helps it stick. The Trace It game shows that order with arrows.
