The story
It's egg hunt day at the zoo, and Murphy finds an extra-special painted egg in the flowers, but it wobbles and rolls away! A gentle elephant whooshes it over the fence with her trunk, an easygoing elk catches it in his antlers, and then it rolls right up to the big EXIT sign and hops onto the zoo train. The zoo train engine chugs all the way around the zoo and brings it back to Murphy, choo choo!

Trace big E and little e, write them on your own, then circle the pictures that start with E. Page two is a coloring page with Murphy and his egg. Free to print.
01Egg roll raceRoll a plastic egg or a small ball across the floor. Every time it stops, say a word with the short “e” sound in egg: bed, red, ten, pet, hen.
02Elephant trunk tossMake an elephant trunk with your arm and gently scoop up a soft toy, then toss it into a basket. Trumpet when you score!
03Exit sign huntNext time you're at a store, library or zoo, look for EXIT signs together. Point to the big E and say “E is for exit!”
For parents
Murphy chases his painted egg all the way around the zoo, and every friend and place he finds starts with the short “e” sound in egg: egg, elephant, elk, exit and engine. Each word pops up next to a big letter E, and Murphy says “E is for…” after each one, so kids see the letter and hear its sound together.
What is the short E sound?
It's the “e” in egg, bed and red. Your mouth opens a little and your lips relax into a small smile. The long E, as in eagle and tree, is the sound that matches the letter's name, and kids usually learn it a little later.
How do I help my child write a little e?
Start in the middle with a short line across, then curve up, over and around, like a snail shell that doesn't quite close. The Trace It game shows that path with arrows.
