The story
It's garden day on Murphy's farm! At sunrise a rooster on the fence crows, cock-a-doodle-doo, and wakes Murphy up. He grabs the rake from beside the barn and rakes neat rows in the garden, then flies along the rows dropping radish seeds and pats them in. Gray clouds roll in and a gentle rain waters the garden, and when the sun comes back, green leaves pop up. A friendly rabbit hops over, tugs on the leaves and pulls up a bright red radish for Murphy, and they each get one to crunch.

The rooster crowed at sunrise, cock-a-doodle-doo!
Murphy jumped up, there was garden work to do!
He grabbed the rake and raked the rows all in a line
So hop up on the couch, let's make a garden shine!

R is rockin', reaching for the sky!
He planted radish seeds, a row, a row, a row
Then down came the rain to help the garden grow!
Pitter, patter, pitter, then the clouds rolled away
And green leaves popped up on a sunny day!
R, R, rooster! (Rooster!)
R, R, rake! (Rake!)
R, R, radish, red and round and bright!
R, R, rain, falling soft and light!
R, R, rabbit, hopping in to say hi!
R is rockin', reaching for the sky!
Here comes a rabbit, hop, hop, hop
She tugged on the leaves and the radish went pop!
She gave it to Murphy, and they shared it, crunch, crunch
Rockin', rockin', a radish for lunch!

For parents
Murphy spends a garden day on his farm, and every friend and thing he meets starts with the letter R: rooster, rake, radish, rain and rabbit. Each word pops up next to a big letter R, and Murphy says “R is for…” after each one, so kids see the letter and hear its sound together.
My child says “w” for R. Is that normal?
Yes. R is one of the last sounds many kids master, and saying “wabbit” for rabbit is very common in the preschool years. Keep modeling the sound in fun words like rooster and radish; a speech therapist can help if it still sticks around later.
How do I help my child write a little r?
Start at the middle line and go straight down to the bottom line, then go back up and make a small curve over to the right, like an arm reaching out. The Trace It game shows it with arrows.
